Bubba Ho-Tep

Bubba Ho-Tep
(2002) [Trailer]
Director: Don Coscarelli (IMDB)

Two of my favorite things in one movie, Elvis and horror. Lets find out if the two together are a good blend... like a nice poly-cotton.

Synopsis: Elvis isn't really dead, he has been hiding out in a nursing home. When a mummy comes to feast on the elderly patron's souls, the King has to step up to try and save the day.

Bubba Ho-Tep is directed by Don Coscarelli, who brought you Phantasm and stars Bruce Campbell from the Evil Dead movies, so I thought this would be amazing. It was not. I was pretty bored throughout this film, mainly due to its inactivity. It's very dialog heavy and then on top of that there's narration. Some of the writing is funny and witty, but the story lacks something for me. It also lacks a lot in the horror department, especially considering Coscarelli's other films. There's not much scary and very little mummy screen time.

Campbell does a pretty good Elvis, so the movie gets points for that, but that's about it.

The Hustler

The Hustler
(1961) [Trailer]
Director: Robert Rossen (IMDB)

This is a classic that I recently picked up on the cheap and decided to throw in the old blu-ray player the other night. It was my first time with this film and I was absolutely impressed. Why you ask? Please continue reading.

Synopsis: Fast Eddie (Paul Newman) is a pool shark. Minnesota Fats (Jackie Gleason) is also a pool shark. They do battle together while Fast Eddie deals with falling in love.

This movie rules and had me locked in within a few minutes. Paul Newman is one cool bastard, but Jackie Gleason and George C Scott did an exceptional job at stealing some of his thunder. Fast Eddie was also a really interesting character in that he's this master pool player but still feels like a loser and is unsure of himself. I felt him to be relatable and genuine. The story takes a huge turn and ends way off base from where I thought it would, it was interesting and seemed very atypical for the time it was made.

If you can find time in your busy little world, I'd recommend you sit down, relax, and check this out.

Ted

Ted
(2012) [Trailer]
Director: Seth MacFarlane (IMDB)

You might have heard of this TV show called Family Guy, it's pretty popular. Well the guy that made that show now has a movie. I will attempt to review it now.

Synopsis: Mark Wahlberg and his Teddy bear are the best of friends, until Mila Kunis gets in between them.

This movie definitely has a bunch of laugh out loud moments. It's nicely put together and the CG for Ted is pretty impressive, but it lacks something for me. There are a lot of scenes I felt could have been left out and the story wasn't the greatest. It is funny like I said, but there's also a lot of misfires in there too.

Ted is a decent enough movie, but I don't know if I'd recommend wasting your hard earned dollars on it. If you really love Family Guy, then yes, see it. If you're luke warm to the show or don't like it, just wait for this to come out on video.
