Babette's Feast
(1987) [Full Movie]
Director: Gabriel Axel (IMDB)
I consider myself an artist, I love to create both music and illustrations. I think art is a curse and a reward in many ways. It brings me such enjoyment, but also frustrates me. Sometimes I think is it worth it? I don't know.
Babette is a young french woman who comes to stay with two aging sisters in a remote seaside town in Denmark. The story unfolds and you learn much about the sisters and Babette.
I really enjoyed this film and I found myself with a lot of uncertainty about what I had just witnessed after my initial viewing. I think, at it's center, this is a film about sacrifice... about giving up what you love and what makes you happy (as is the case with Babette and her art.) It's also about religion and how it can be repressive. The first half is a little slow but important overall, so if you plan on checking this out, stick with it to the end. The feast scene is wonderful and a great climax to the film, there's so many good moments throughout it.
The scenery, acting, and story are all top notch and executed perfectly. Check this out if you're into dramas.
